Material Markup That Hits Target Margin (Not Just a Round Number)

"Double the parts" is a habit, not a strategy. On a labor-heavy service call it can overprice a $12 part and still leave the job thin after travel. On an equipment install it can leave you short of target net margin because labor and overhead dominate. Markup should serve the job's margin target — not a round number on the supply-house invoice.

Markup is only one lever

Job net margin comes from the whole stack: burdened labor, travel, vehicle, overhead, leads, and materials. Materials markup cannot fix an underpriced trip fee or ignored drive time. Get those right first, then set parts policy so the combined invoice hits target.

A practical method

  1. Pick a common ticket (e.g. capacitor swap, faucet install, breaker replacement).
  2. Enter labor, travel, vehicle, overhead, and material cost in the calculator.
  3. Raise material sell price until net margin hits your target for that job type.
  4. Back into the markup % (or flat-rate sell) and use that tier for similar parts.

Many shops use tiers: high markup on cheap/fast-moving parts, lower percentage on big-ticket equipment where customers compare price sheets — but only if the install labor and overhead still clear target dollars.

Watch the markup vs margin trap

Update when costs move

Supply prices drift. Flat-rate books go stale. Recost flagship jobs quarterly so your "standard markup" still delivers the margin you think it does.
